My wife likes to make fun of me for my man crush on Jeremy Renner. I enjoyed him as a hothead ex-cop way back in S.W.A.T. but my fandom reached mockable levels after The Hurt Locker and The Town. In both, he took the hothead thing to virtuoso levels. Not even that I’m a fan of hotheads. In real life, my idols are models of equanimity. But in my entertainment, I like stories born out of some unpredictable cat who won’t be controlled. And there isn’t a better model than the Bourne movies.
Renner is taking over the franchise from Matt Damon. I’d have to guess his performance for Damon’s best bud Ben Affleck in The Town had something to do with securing the role. The good news is that it isn’t some shoehorn into a role Damon already mastered. Renner’s not playing Jason Bourne, he’s playing some other Bourne-like killing machine. And the fourth installment of the series was written by Tony Gilroy, who wrote the first three, and he’s also directing. It won’t suck. Trailer below. I promised my wife I’d take her. But only if she starts calling me Jeremy.
