Small Business Optimism down. Chain Store Sales up.

Chain Store Sales (week ended 7/6/2003)

ICSC – Goldman Store Sales

– Store Sales Week/Week +3.0%. Previous was +0.6%.

– Store Sales – Year/Year +2.9%. Previous was +1.9%

Redbook

– Store Sales Year/Year 3.6%.  Previous was +2.9%.

The Consumer Metrics Institute Daily Absolute Demand Index of online discretionary spending showed that spike but then tapered off starting this past Sunday.  Those Chain Store Sales gains of last week may not hold.  The Consumer Metrics index is a near rear-time reading but has imperfect correlation with Chain Store Sales.

NFIB Small Business Optimism Index (June 2013)

– Index level 93.5. Previous was 94.4.

When we look at the jobs report of Small Business Optimism it is becoming difficult to sort out the effects of any economic cycle from the effects of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.  Last weeks’ BLS report, for example, showed more people working but fewer people working fulltime.  It is difficult to determine the macroeconomic effects of that.
